About Us
Syntracts is an AI-powered legal-tech startup on a mission to deliver on the unfulfilled promise of legal AI, reshaping how top firms turn their most valuable asset, their contracts, into structured, actionable intelligence.
Forget prompt engineering and wrapping third-party APIs. We’re building the foundational layer for legal data. With backing from top VCs in NYC, SF, and Boston, our proprietary platform uses hundreds of fine-tuned small language models to structure complex legal documents with unparalleled accuracy. It’s built for the enterprise: secure, scalable, and deployable entirely on-premises.
This is a unique opportunity to join as one of our early team members and help shape not just our operations, but also our culture, processes, and trajectory.
The Role
We’re seeking a Legal Knowledge Lead ready to trade the traditional law firm grind for a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment where you can help build something from the ground up.
To train our proprietary platform, we need legal subject matter experts to leverage their large-firm experience to meticulously review incoming contracts, catalog key clauses and sections, and structure this information into labeled data points that our research team uses to build and refine the Syntracts platform.
In the short term, you’ll independently scope, shape, and label data points within the Syntracts application. While initial projects will come from leadership, you’ll quickly take ownership of prioritizing and directing data creation as the team and your role evolve.
Over time, you’ll have the opportunity to grow into a senior position as the Legal Ops team expands. Success in this role requires competence, reliability, and professionalism across all interactions, along with strong leadership potential.
This role reports directly to the Director of Legal Operations and is fully remote, with occasional travel for team events.
Responsibilities
Independently scope, shape, and label data points within the Syntracts application
Lead the creation and labeling of new legal ‘data points’ from complex legal documents to train and improve our AI models, ensuring outputs meet the high-accuracy and formatting standards expected by top-tier legal professionals.
Create, iterate and refine data point schemas to effectively transform unstructured data in legal documents into structured data.
Work closely with the Director of Legal Operations, the Product Experience team, and the engineering team to provide domain-specific legal expertise that guides feature development and product roadmap decisions.
Provide feedback to identify gaps in our products and propose solutions that address real-world legal workflow challenges
Prioritize internal data initiatives and work with clients for optimal customer success
Review and validate new model outputs to ensure accuracy, relevance, alignment, and practical utility for legal professionals working with complex contracts.
Review existing model performances and iterate on new data point schemas where initial model performance is lower than expected or required.
Serve as the bridge between technical teams and legal domain expertise, translating complex legal concepts into clear product requirements and vice versa.
Act as the attorney-to-attorney interface with Big Law clients, leading training sessions, diagnosing integration issues, and translating customer feedback into actionable product improvements.
Experience & Skills
Juris Doctor or similar degree with a minimum 3-5 years in transactional law, legal innovation, or legal operations at a top-tier law firm with demonstrable expertise in drafting and reviewing complex contracts.
Excellent legal research skills, with the ability to quickly understand contractual concepts from a broad range of legal documents across multiple practice groups.
Meticulous attention to detail with an orientation towards accuracy and quality in legal data essential for legal document labeling and product quality assurance work.
Ability to think structurally about legal concepts, seeing documents as composed of reusable data patterns rather than unique prose.
Strong ability to clearly explain complex legal concepts to non-legal audiences and to translate technical product features into practical benefits for legal workflows.
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in cross-functional teams and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, startup environment
Comfort with legaltech tools (Kira, eBrevia, Harvey, Legora, Hebbia, Foundation, etc.), AI/ML basic concepts, and curiosity and willingness to learn new systems/technologies.
Effective time management and the ability to juggle multiple projects and priorities at once
Bonus points if you have…
Competence in producing engaging thought-leadership and knowledge articles that resonate with a legal audience
Knowledge Management, Legal Ops, or Legal Innovation experience in a large law firm or in-house legal team
Some familiarity with programming languages, especially Python and JavaScript.
Comfort engaging with subject matter experts and leading discussions related to data points and schemas
